Biography

Brandon Kaplan

Brandon Kaplan is a Los Angeles-based classical and film composer as well as a new music-focused pianist. Brandon’s music frequently seeks to recreate personal and profound experiences and emotions inspired by architecture, nature, color, and texture. Entire cities, sunsets, and abstract geometries are poignantly brought to life in a myriad of styles written for settings ranging from the string quartet to modular synthesizer. Most recently, Brandon created original music for a documentary short about mental health and wrote a solo violin piece for Boston-based composer/violinist Patrick Wu. Also of note is a multi-composer remix album project that Brandon was a part of, titled "R e : W o r k s”, the proceeds of which went to artist relief from the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to the pandemic, he orchestrated the music of “QUILT: A Musical Celebration” for performance during the June 2019 World Pride celebrations in New York City, and performed in the show as a pianist.  Brandon graduated in 2019 with his master’s degree in music composition at California State University, Long Beach, where his thesis composition focused on the traffic and design patterns of the Los Angeles freeway system. While there, Brandon extensively studied various aspects of composition and contemporary music with Drs. Alan Shockley, Raymond Torres-Santos, Carolyn Bremer, Adriana Verdié, and Martin Herman. He also had the privilege of writing for and working with esteemed visiting artists such as HOCKET, Hub New Music, NOW Ensemble, and Friction Quartet. Additionally, Brandon earned his BFA from Tulane University in music composition, with studies in digital media production and architecture, where he principally studied with Dr. Maxwell Dulaney.
