Biography

Coloratura soprano Mithuna Sivaraman was a First Place winner in the 2021 Rocky Mountain Winter Baroque Music Festival, and a semi-finalist in the 2021 Camerata Bardi International Vocal Competition and Lyra New York’s 2020 International Vocal Competition. Since moving to the NYC area in 2018, she has made role debuts in New York and New Jersey as Colleen in Scott Joiner’s Connection Lost (Modern Opera Company), Casilda in Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Gondoliers (Ridgewood G&S Opera Company), Clizia in Handel’s Teseo (Cantanti Project), and Drusilla in Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea (New York Lyric Opera Theater); and covered the role of Savitri in New Camerata Opera’s double bill of Venus and Adonis/Savitri. She has also performed with companies in California and Washington D.C.; other roles performed include Belinda (Dido and Aeneas) and Gretel (Hansel and Gretel).
Mithuna is a 2019 alumna of IVAI, and was accepted as a Studio Artist for Teatro Nuovo's (formerly Bel Canto at Caramoor) 2020 season (cancelled due to COVID). She is also an experienced choral artist; she sang with the San Francisco Symphony Chorus from 2014 to 2018, and is a member of Downtown Voices at Trinity Wall Street. She also sings as a chamber artist and has appeared as a soloist on numerous occasions at St. Joseph's Parish in Somers, NY.
Born and raised in Singapore, she is of Tamil descent, and has extensively trained in both Hindustani and Carnatic classical voice, with teachers including Ustad Vilayat Khan and D.K. Pattammal.
In her non-singing life, Mithuna is a seasoned transfer pricing specialist and a California-licensed attorney.
"Soprano Mithuna Sivaraman used her coloratura instrument effectively in "Da tempeste il legno infranto" from Handel's Giulio Cesare. The clarity of her embellishments of the vocal line left no doubt about her gift for Baroque opera."
