Biography

Zachary Owen

ACTING: After pivoting in December 2020 from a focus on operatic work to a focus on acting full time, Zachary quickly began his new career with a workshop of the play "Punkass Pastry" by John Jay in the leading role of Arnie. Over the course of 2021 and the spring of 2022, he followed that up by appearing in leading roles in 10 short films (including Lavender, In Silk, and the Legend of Rudy), 2 web series, and 2 online commercial spots (Neato Vacuum and Nauzene Kids). During this time he also attended multiple classes at Acting Studio Chicago (including an Advanced on Camera class with Janelle Snow). After signing with Big Mouth Talent in August of 2022, Zachary is excited for his next appearance as Lt Schrank in Teatro Lirico di Cagliari's production of "West Side Story." OPERATIC BACKGROUND: During the 2018-2019 season, Mr. Owen made his Atlanta Opera debut as Lt. Schrank in West Side Story as well as his Pensacola Opera debut as Count Capulet in Roméo et Juliette. In the fall of 2019, Mr. Owen returned to Atlanta Opera as Edward G. Robinson in their production of Frida and in the winter of 2020, Mr. Owen returned to Kentucky Opera to perform Bartolo in Le nozze di Figaro. In the spring of 2020, Mr. Owen was scheduled to make his debut with Pacific Symphony singing the Herald and covering Lodovico in Verdi’s Otello although it was canceled due to COVID-19. Mr. Owen has also has performed with such companies as Cincinnati Opera, Kentucky Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, Central City Opera, Opera North, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, and Opera Santa Barbara. He has performed the roles of Dulcamara in L’elisir d’amore, Alidoro in La Cenerentola, Ashby in La fanciulla del West, Don Fernando in Fidelio, Matouš in Smetana’s The Kiss, Figaro in Le nozze di Figaro, Haly in L’italiana in Algeri, Nick Shadow in The Rake’s Progress, the Commendatore in Don Giovanni, der Sprecher in Die Zauberflöte, Spencer Coyle in Owen Wingrave, and the title role in Don Pasquale. A strong advocate for new American Opera, Mr. Owen participated in a composer’s workshop at Cincinnati Opera in which he worked alongside Jake Heggie, Jack O’Brien, and Terrence McNally to develop their new opera, Great Scott. Mr. Owen is the recipient of numerous awards including the Grace Keagy Award at the Lotte Lenya Competition and he was a national semifinalist in the Met Opera Competition.
