Ben Gulley

The American operatic tenor, Ben Gulley, has been hailed "as an outstanding tenor (Opera News)" and "startlingly-gifted (San Francisco Classical Voice)." Mr. Gulley's global career is flourishing with feature roles in opera, solo engagements, concert, film work, touring and prestigious appearances abroad. Recent artistic and critical triumphs include Quasimodo in Dennis DeYoung's HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME (Skylight Music Theater 2022), debut as Mario Cavaradossi in TOSCA (Sarasota Opera 2022), the Tenor Soloist in Beethoven’s 9TH SYMPHONY (University of Texas-Austin 2022, Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra 2021), the Tenor Soloist in Mahler's DAS LIED VON DER ERDE opposite the incomparable Michelle DeYoung (Belgian National Orchestra 2021) in Brussels and Namur, Belgium, featured artist for the National WW1 Monument (Kansas City) Centennial Celebration 2021 and headlining both Masterworks and Pops performances with symphonies and arts presenters worldwide. 

​The 2022-2023 season begins being honored by his alma mater, The UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance, at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts CRESCENDO event in Kansas City, MO, performing Faust in the finale of Boito’s MEFISTOFELE alongside fellow alum/honoree, Scott Conner, bass, 2022. Then Masterworks NIGHT AT THE OPERA with Asheville Symphony 2022, LESSONS & CAROLS with Monteverde Academy 2022, Hidden Valley Music Seminars RECITAL Carmel Valley, CA 2022, Masterworks VIVA VERDI! with Tallahassee Symphony 2023, the Tenor in Verdi’s REQUIEM with Orchestra Iowa 2023, Radames in AIDA with Fort Worth Opera 2023, the Tenor in Brückner’s TE DEUM with the Belgian National Orchestra in Brussels, Belgium, and as Edgardo in LUICA DI LAMMERMOOR with Opera Orlando 2023.

The COVID-19 disruption in the performing arts saw Mr. Gulley making his Dallas Opera RECITAL digital debut 2020, OPERA IN THE PARK Opera Idaho 2021, ARIA-THON and OPERA IN THE PARK WITH BEN with Opera Steamboat 2020, RECITALS for Perdue University, North Dakota State University, Epworth by the Sea, Banner Elk Community Concerts and the Jacksonville, FL Museum of Science and History IMAX 2021. Mr. Gulley was finishing his acclaimed 2019-2020 BEN GULLEY NATIONAL CONCERT TOUR presented by LiveONStage before the tour was concluded early due to COVID-19. Previous seasons saw his returns to Opera San Luis Obispo as Tamino in DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE 2018 and 2012, return to Sarasota Opera debut as Ismaele in Verdi’s NABUCCO 2018, debut as the Foreign Prince in Dvorak's RUSALKA with Opera Steamboat 2019, debut as Dr. Marianus in Mahler’s 8TH SYMPHONY OF A THOUSAND with South Dakota Symphony (the history-making FINALE accomplishing the world record of performing the entire Mahler Cycle) 2018, the Tenor Soloist in BEETHOVEN VS COLDPLAY by Steve Hackman with the Grand Rapids Symphony 2018, Christmas Pops concerts with Jacksonville Symphony 2018, Operetta RECITAL Sarasota Opera 2019, and headlined The Lyric Opera of Kansas City OPERA BALL 2019. His 2016-2018 seasons saw Mr. Gulley’s international company debuts with Hamburg Staatsoper where he covered the late-great Marcello Giordani as Enées in LES TROYENS under Maestro Kent Nagano, performing at the Great Pyramids of Egypt in Giza, Egypt 2017, company and role debut with Sarasota Opera starring as Pedro in d'Albert's TIEFLAND (the 3rd North American performance), his CARNEGIE HALL debut with The American Symphony as the Tenor Soloist in Haydn's MASS IN TIME OF WAR 2017, completed 70 tour dates on his US National Recital Tour presented by Allied Concert Services 2016. 

Mr. Gulley is equally at home in the musical theater having won praise and awards for his rave-reviewed turn as Quasimodo in Dennis DeYoung’s HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME (Skylight Musical Theater 2022). Dan in NEXT TO NORMAL (MTH 2016), Jack in INTO THE WOODS (MTH 2010), and originating DISNEY’S stage version of the evil puppeteer, Stromboli, in Stephen Schwartz’s GEPETTO & SON (Coterie Theater).  

As a contemporary crossover artist, 2016 marked the commercial release of his debut solo album of original music, “IN BETWEEN,” which is available on every major music distribution and streaming service. Mr. Gulley was a member of the SONY/BMG Masterworks recording & global touring group, THE AMERICAN TENORS, 2010-14, alongside fellow tenors Nathan Granner and Daniel Montenegro produced by THE IRISH TENORS' Frank McNamara. Mr. Gulley was twice featured on the PBS nationally-televised Memorial Day event “CELEBRATION AT THE STATION”  with the Kansas City Symphony (2011 & 2009) with Maestro Michael Stern and violinist, Mark O'Conner. Plus, numerous crossover concerts and charity events with mainstream artists and entertainers such as David Foster, Natalie Cole (R.I.P.), Brenna Whitaker, Mustafa Shakir, Jamie Fox, Idina Menzel, Blues Traveler, SNL alumni Darryl Hammond, Mark O'Conner, Rogelio Douglas Jr., JoJo, Malia Civitz, Jesse Lynch and others.
