Biography

William Guanbo Su is a current Studio Artist at The Houston Grand Opera, since 2019.

Mr. Su has been a Gerdine Young Artist at Opera Theatre of Saint Louis and an opera fellow at the Aspen Music Festival. Roles include Pluton in Rameau’s Hippolyte et Aricie, Don Basilio in The Barber of Seville and Seneca in Monteverdi’s Coronation of Poppea. He participated in Renée Fleming’s Song Studio workshop at Carnegie Hall, and have studied German lieder at the Franz Schubert Institute in Vienna under the guidance of Elly Ameling, Helmut Deutsch, and Julius Drake.

In addition, Mr. Su continues his commitment to the concert repertoire. He made his Carnegie Hall debut with Bass soloist in Bach’s Christmas Oratorio and returned to the same stage with Handel’s Messiah one year after.

William Guanbo Su was a Grand Final Winner at 2019 Metropolitan Opera National Council Audition, he has also won First Prize in the 2017 Liederkranz Foundation Song/Lieder Competition, and Third Prize in 2018 Gerda Lissner Opera Competition. He was also the second prize winner at the Eleanor McCollum Competition at Houston Grand Opera in 2019. He has appeared with such opera companies as Houston Grand Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis and The Chinese National Centre of the Performing Arts.

Mr. Su holds a Master of Music degree from The Juilliard School and Bachelor of Music Degree from Manhattan School of Music, New York.
