Biography

Praised for her "...lustrous, warm and deep [sound]..." American mezzo soprano, Lindsay Kate Brown, is quickly making her mark in the world of opera. Currently a third year studio artist with Houston Grand Opera, Ms. Brown made her HGO debut in 2019 as Giovanna in Tomer Zvulun’s production of Verdi’s Rigoletto. As part of her duties in the studio, Ms. Brown has also studied the demanding roles of Léonor in Donizetti’s La Favorite, Charlotte in Massenet’s Werther, Herodias in Strauss’ Salome, and Kundry in Wagner’s Parsifal. Ms. Brown will continue her season with HGO as part of their digital series in Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel where she will sing Gertrude. Ms. Brown will close out the season in Rodgers’ and Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music where she will be singing Sister Berthe and Chant Leader. Other notable performances include her performance of Komponist in Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos with Wolf Trap Opera and Ma Moss in Aaron Copland’s The Tender Land with Des Moines Metro Opera. Most recently, Ms. Brown was a Finalist in the Metropolitan National Opera Council Auditions, performing with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra under Maestro Bertrand de Billy. The week prior, Ms. Brown was a recipient of a George London Award from the famous George London Foundation. Ms. Brown was the first prize recipient in Opera Columbus’ Cooper-Bing Competition in May 2019. In February 2018, Ms. Brown placed third in Houston Grand Opera's Eleanor McCollum Competition, an International Competition for up and coming singers.
“…Brown possesses a uniquely dark timbre…she has great control over her large instrument, which was showcased no finer than in “Sgombra è la sacra selva”. The aria, vulnerable and exposed, is hard to pull off as a young singer, but along with a striking instrument, she’s also a committed actress. Her second aria “Da, Chas Nastal!” may have been slightly overindulgent, but boring she is not..."
