Biography

Theo Hoffman

Theo Hoffman is making a name for himself as one of the most diverse classical singers of his generation. He has performed under the baton of James Conlon, Marin Alsop, Giovanni Antonini, Michele Gamba, and Plácido Domingo. He has performed in productions by Sir David Pountney, Barrie Kosky, Francesca Zambello, James Darrah, Mary Birnbaum, Ted Huffman, et al. In 2023, Theo makes his debut at Staatsoper Hamburg as Prosdocimo in Rossini's Il Turco in Italia, and later in the year makes his debut at Opernhaus Zürich in a TBA new production in their 2023-24 season. The 2021-22 season saw him in his Seattle Opera debut as Schaunard in La bohème. He made a double-hitter debut at Israeli Opera as Papageno in Barrie Kosky's acclaimed production of Die Zauberflöte, a production he previously performed at LA Opera, and later in the season as Conte Almaviva in a new production of Le nozze di Figaro, a role he previously performed at Opera Theatre of St. Louis. Also last season, he appeared at Bard Music Festival in Ethel Smyth's one-act opera Fête Galante, performed Schubert's epic song cycle Die Schöne Müllerin at the Castleton Festival, performed Jake Heggie's Three Decembers with Berkshire Opera Festival, appeared with Washington Concert Opera as Frédéric in Lakmé, and appeared at both the Ravinia Festival and Moab Music Festival in various recital appearances. Ideally suited for contemporary repertoire, Hoffman created a title role in the critically acclaimed world premiere of Philip Venables’ Denis & Katya for his debut at Opera Philadelphia. He has performed in three Philip Glass operas: Satyagraha at Los Angeles Opera, The Trial at Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, and Les Enfants Terribles at Opera Omaha. He sang the Steward in Jonathan Dove’s Flight for his debut at Des Moines Metro Opera, and in 2020 sang the US Premiere of Joby Talbot's A Sheen of Dew on Flowers. Hoffman has concertized with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Wiener Akademie and Il Giardino Armonico at the Salzburg Mozartwoche, Marlboro Music, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Orchestre National de Lille, New York Festival of Song, Vocal Arts DC, Tucson Desert Song Festival, Cecilia Chorus of New York, Grand Teton Music Festival, Portland Symphony Orchestra, and Chamber Music Northwest. He has appeared in recital at some of the world’s leading venues, including the Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, and Alice Tully Hall. He spent three summers at Marlboro Music, where he performed Othmar Schoeck's epic Notturno as well as the Arnold Schoenberg arrangement of Mahler's Lied eines fahrenden Gesellen. Hoffman was a member of the Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist Program at Los Angeles Opera from 2016-18, where he performed in their productions of Candide, Carmen, Macbeth, Salome, and Les Contes d’Hoffmann. Hoffman is the 2018 recipient of a Sara Tucker Study Grant from the Richard Tucker Music Foundation, as well as a 2017 career grant from the Sullivan Foundation, and was a 2016 Grand Finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.
