Biography

Praised for her “theatrical instincts and intriguingly versatile instrument,” Japanese-American soprano Emily Michiko Jensen is an emerging young artist establishing herself as a captivating performer.

This season, Emily joins Pensacola Opera as a member of the Artists in Residence program. She is excited to sing First Lady while covering Pamina in the company's 2022 production of Die Zauberflöte. She will also cover Berta in their 2022 production of Il Barbiere di Siviglia.

She was most recently seen as Jessie in Weill's Mahagonny: Ein SongSpiel at Florentine Opera (May 2021). During her time there, she was scheduled to perform the role of Maguelonne in Viardot’s Cendrillon* and cover the title role. She was also contracted to cover Mimi in the company's spring production of La Bohème*. (*postponed due to pandemic)

During the 2019-2020 season, Emily made her role debut as Suor Angelica at the Indiana University Opera Theatre. She also sang Donna Anna in Don Giovanni at Boston Opera Collaborative, where she made her company debut as Marguerite (Faust) in 2016.

Emily was an Apprentice Artist at Sarasota Opera, and a Studio Artist with Chautauqua Opera
While at Chautauqua, she sang the role of 2nd Soprano in Missy Mazzoli’s Song from the Uproar and covered Annina in La Traviata with Maestro Steven Osgood. She returned the following season to cover the role of Soprano 2 in Hydrogen Jukebox.

Previous roles include Blanche in Dialogues of the Carmelites, Foreign Woman in The Consul, Suzel in L’amico Fritz, Governess in The Turn of the Screw, and Tiny in Paul Bunyan. Other engagements included selections as Ilia in Idomeneo, Mimi in La Bohème, Fiordiligi in Cosi fan tutte, Zdenka in Arabella, Alma in Summer and Smoke, and Pamina in Die Zauberflöte.
Jensen is a gifted singing actress blessed with fine theatrical instincts and an unusually well rounded, intriguingly versatile instrument. She proved capable of handling the character’s full emotional range.. Her rolling, butterscotch-gold soprano transitioned seamlessly through the registers, revealing a powerful, bright top, a warm, sweet middle range, and rich low notes."
