Biography

Bass-baritone Steele Fitzwater, originally from Dawson, West Virginia, is a recent master’s degree graduate and current performer’s diploma candidate studying with Peter Volpe at Indiana University, Bloomington. On stage at IU, Steele has recently been seen as the title role of Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, Achilla in Handel’s Giulio Cesare, and as the 2nd Grail Knight in Wagner’s Parsifal. Equally at home in concert work as in opera, he has performed many oratorio solos, including those in Haydn’s The Seasons, The Creation, and Handel’s Messiah. A past young artist with Central City Opera and the Brevard Music Center, Steele has appeared on stage in Britten’s Billy Budd and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, and the world premiere of Falling Angel composed by J. Mark Scearce. Steele completed his undergraduate studies at Miami University (Ohio) with degrees in both voice and fashion & design.
